Comment by Kevin Hustler, CEO of Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber
We welcome the announcement by Famous Brands of a further investment in the Coega Industrial Development Zone (IDZ).
Famous Brands has proven itself a valuable partner of the Coega Development Corporation, and the region of Nelson Mandela Bay, since investing in Famous Brands Fine Cheese Company (formerly Coega Cheese Company) in 2013.
The joint venture with Coega Diary for the production of Mozzarella, cheese slices and cream cheese for the Famous Brands Group has proven to be highly beneficial for the region’s economy. In just three years, the number of jobs has grown from 54 jobs in 2013 to 99 jobs with locals being trained to become professional cheesemakers.
The company has also formed valuable relationships with the dairy farmers in the Eastern Cape and we are excited by the announcement that this model may be duplicated to benefit local tomato farmers with the new investment. We look forward to jobs growth at the tomato plant as well as the region’s agro-processing value chain.
The company’s expanding manufacturing footprint not only attributes to the Nelson Mandela Bay economy, but also reduces our reliance on imports in the South African economy.
