Prof. Steve Burgess, who is featured in the latest edition of Infocom, has this to say about the Bay:
I fell in love with Port Elizabeth and the people here when I first arrived in South Africa in 1981. I moved to NMMU for the challenge of helping build a truly world-class business school, focusing in new ways on the problems of emergent economies and societies. I was very impressed by a University leadership team that could produce the Vision 2020 strategy and by their commitment to that vision, especially Prof Swartz.
Port Elizabeth has been recognised formally as a leading world city for its technology. There are some really outstanding companies in Nelson Mandela Bay, employing world-class technologies and business practices. The integration of data, technology, systems and management in factories such as VW, PG Bison and Eberspaecher is very exciting. Rapid advances in demand chain management will push that envelope even further.
As an American baseball player once said, the future ain't what it used to be. There is the problem of predicting needed skills at a stage in a time of such discontinuity and complexity.
All of this suggests that we need to work harder and smarter, both of which require us to find new skills in managing and motivating people.
