The Coega Development Corporation (CDC) has begun work in clearing 54.62 hectares of land in Zone 1 of the Coega Industrial Development Zone (IDZ) in preparation for the biggest automotive investment in Africa in the last 40 years.

South Africa’s automotive industry has received a major shot in the arm with the announcement today of the biggest greenfield investment in 40 years. The multi-billion rand joint-venture agreement between the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) and China’s Beijing Automotive Group Co. LTD (BAIC) will see the establishment of a new car manufacturing plant located in the Coega Industrial Development Zone outside Port Elizabeth.
The Coega Development Corporation (CDC), operator of the 11 500 hectares of the Coega Industrial Development Zone (IDZ), has successfully concluded a deal with BAIC of R11 billion for a completely knocked down (CKD) automotive manufacturing plant in the Coega Industrial Development Zone.
The Russian Ambassador, HE Mikhali Petrakov visited the Coega IDZ today, and was welcomed by the MEC for Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism, Hon. Sakhumzi Somyo, to establish a mutually beneficial business relationship between the Coega Development Corporation, Eastern Cape, and Russia. The Russian Ambassador is currently on a week-long exploration visit to the Eastern Cape.
Coega Dairy completed the expansion of its warehouse and office facilities. The fast growing dairy company in the Coega Industrial Zone is celebrating 5 years of operations. Coega Dairy started production in 2011 in a modern, environmental friendly dairy plant. The company aligned with the largest retailers in South Africa and is currently one of the top UHT milk producers in South Africa.
The Coega Development Corporation (CDC) is yet again in the running for an Oliver Empowerment Award for the third consecutive time. The prestigious event will be hosted at Emperors Palace in Johannesburg on the 14th of April 2016.
The leading catalyst championing socio-economic development will be attending the 15th Annual Oliver Empowerment Awards as a finalist for the Top Empowered: Vision 2030 Award and the Top Empowered: Job Creation Award. In addition, the CDC is in line to receive the Honorary Legend of Empowerment and Transformation Award. This award celebrates success and honours those who have made a significant contribution to transformation in South Africa. Absa Group Limited, Woolworths, Metropolitan Holdings and Super Group are also amongst some of the organisations’ who will be receiving this prestigious award.
Casting my eyes on the year, one which I must admit hasn’t been easy, has triggered emotions of reflection on the progress the CDC has made in impacting the lives of many South Africans across the footprint of the country.
The CDC, through various projects in the industrial development zone or project management where CDC is an implementing agent on government infrastructure development programme has made a welcomed impact and touched the lives of more than 5.6 million people (approximately 10.6% of total SA’s population). This means that the CDC has indeed become a beacon of hope for many SA’s, especially those residing in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, among others.

A sugar processing company with a network that stretches throughout Southern Africa is one of the first new investors in a new R86-million (US$ 7,4-million) agro-processing multi-user facility in the Coega Industrial Development Zone (IDZ).
