Generally, agro-processing outputs are intermediate products to which further value is added, or consumer goods that are marketed through wholesaler and retailers. There is enormous potential for this sector in Nelson Mandela Bay as it is the major seaport and industrial hub of the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. Because the province contains all seven of the country's diverse natural biomes, practically every kind of crop or animal can be grown or raised in the region.

As a result, the province raises more livestock than any other province and produces a quarter of the nation’s milk. Outside of the Metro's urban boundaries, the region’s agricultural sector produces a diverse mix of goods: deciduous fruit (Langkloof valley), citrus fruit (Patensie and Sundays River Valley) and chicory (Alexandria).

Historically speaking, wool and ostrich feathers were the region’s first exports and the Bay remains a global leader in the distribution of these products. In addition to wool and mohair, dairy, fruit, poultry, and leather form part of other major agro-processing industries located in the Bay.

The region also has a well-established beverage and bottling industry with Coca-Cola Beverages Africa and South African Breweries.
