The South African automotive manufacturing sector makes up close to a third of all manufacturing activity in the country and an even larger portion of Nelson Mandela Bay’s economy. Amongst many others, the Bay is home to some of the biggest international brands in the industry: Volkswagen, Ford, Goodyear, Bridgestone, Isuzu South Africa, Continental Tyre, Shatterprufe, and First Automotive Works (FAW).
At present, only 35% of the components and parts used to make vehicles in South Africa are produced within the country and the business sector is very much encouraged that the adotpion of the South African Automotive Masterplan now serves as the roadmap and new incentive framework for increasing production and productivity. Its core objectives include increasing localisation of the automotive value chain to 60% and attracting foreign direct investment and technology transfer to enhance the capacity and capability of local manufacturers.
