The South African automotive manufacturing sector makes up close to a third of all manufacturing activity in the country and an even larger portion of Nelson Mandela Bay’s economy. Amongst many others, the Bay is home to some of the biggest international brands in the industry: Volkswagen, Ford, Goodyear, Bridgestone, Continental Tyre, Shatterprufe, and First Automotive Works (FAW). In addition, Isuzu Motors South Africa officially commenced operations in the city on the 1st of January 2018 and the Bay received another major boost with the on-going construction of South Africa’s biggest greenfield investment (R11 billion) by Beijing Automobile Corporation (BAIC) in a new manufacturing plant located in the Coega Special Economic Zone.

At present, only 35% of the components and parts used to make vehicles in South Africa are produced within the country and the business sector is very much encouraged that the recently adopted South African Automotive Masterplan now serves as the roadmap and new incentive framework for increasing production and productivity. Core objectives of this plan include the increasing localisation of the automotive value chain to 60% and attracting foreign direct investment and technology transfer to enhance the capacity and capability of local manufacturers.
