In a shining example of dedication, teamwork and the power of technology, a suspected car break-in specialist who has been targeting the Kings Beach, Barney’s and Lovers Lane areas for a while was finally apprehended yesterday.

“The success of this operation highlights how far we've come in using technology to fight crime. Our license plate identification cameras and PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) surveillance systems proved instrumental in identifying and tracking the suspect’s movements. Behind the scenes, the tireless work of City Wide’s monitoring room personnel ensured that no detail went unnoticed,” says Tati Tsunke, chairman of the Beachfront Cluster, a geographic cluster of the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber.

To strengthen safety measures in the Beachfront area, the Beachfront Cluster invested R650,000 in advanced security equipment - a move that is now yielding tangible results.

“A massive well done goes out to Warrant Officer Van der Berg and his team at the South African Police Services (SAPS), along with the incredible support from City Wide, Summerstrand Neighbourhood Watch and other security companies in the city, whose collaboration played a pivotal role in tracking down the suspect. This arrest marks a major win for community safety in the area and sends a clear message that crime will not go unchecked in our neighbourhood,” Tsunke added.

He said that special praise must go to Warrant Officer Van der Berg for his unwavering commitment and long hours spent on this case. His dedication, coupled with seamless coordination between public and private security teams, resulted in what many are calling a "prize catch."

“This operation is not just a win for law enforcement - it’s a win for the Beachfront area. It's a reminder of what can be achieved when teams come together to make our streets safer.”

The Chamber has 11 geographic business clusters operating around the metro where businesses are collaborating with various stakeholders to address issues in their immediate operating environment.  “Safety and security is an issue which is common to all the clusters and efforts are underway in the clusters to step up efforts in this regard.  We believe that the cameras which the Beachfront Cluster has installed, as well as those that have been rolled out in our other clusters, will help improve visibility and response from SAPS and the private security companies, while also helping to deter crime from taking place,” says Denise van Huyssteen, CEO of the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber.

She emphasised that through a collaborative action from all the stakeholders, matched by the increased roll-out of cameras and proactive surveillance, safety and security in the metro can improve. “Ultimately we want to help SAPS to have access and full visibility to hot spot crime areas and to support their efforts to radically reduce crime.”

Colonel Connie van Niekerk, Head of the SAPS DOCC, highlighted that they were grateful for the support. “These resources will allow us to plug into a broader network of crime intelligence and respond more effectively. It’s encouraging to see the private sector actively supporting public safety."

The Chamber remains committed to driving initiatives that promote a safer, more secure city for all residents and businesses as this aligns with its work of repositioning the metro as the Bay of Opportunity.
