The Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber is closely monitoring the planned nationwide March and March protests scheduled for tomorrow (30 June). While the Chamber respects the constitutional right to peaceful protest, it is equally mindful of the potential impact that any disruptions may have on business operations, the movement of goods and services, and the safety of employees and customers. Against this backdrop, the Chamber is encouraging businesses to remain vigilant and to take appropriate precautions to minimise operational risks while ensuring the continued safety of their staff and assets.
The prospect of disruptions has prompted a number of businesses across Nelson Mandela Bay to implement precautionary measures to safeguard employees, customers and property. Several Chamber members have indicated that they will be adjusting their operations for the day by avoiding identified protest routes, postponing or suspending out-of-town deliveries, limiting staff travel where appropriate, and strengthening on-site security measures.
Any disruptions to business operations carries significant economic consequences. Delays in the movement of goods and services, interruptions to supply chains, reduced trading hours and increased security costs place additional pressure on businesses that are already operating in a challenging economic environment. The impact extends beyond individual businesses, affecting employees, customers, suppliers and the broader regional economy.
The Chamber has been informed that the South African Police Service will deploy its available resources across the metro to maintain law and order and to ensure that any demonstrations remain peaceful. We welcome these measures and encourage continued cooperation between law enforcement agencies, protest organisers and communities to minimise disruption while safeguarding lives and property.
The Chamber urges all businesses to remain vigilant throughout the day, closely monitor developments, and activate contingency plans where necessary. Employers are encouraged to communicate clearly with their employees regarding travel arrangements, workplace safety and operational changes. Motorists are also advised to remain alert and avoid areas where protest activity may affect traffic flow.
Our appeal is for calm, restraint and responsible conduct by all parties. Nelson Mandela Bay’s economy depends on stability, certainty and the uninterrupted operation of businesses. It is therefore in the collective interest of residents, businesses, workers and protest organisers alike to ensure that constitutional rights are exercised responsibly and without compromising public safety or economic activity.
